Is it possible to run 9x on P4?specs D915GRV w P4 672/4GB/.5TBI can't find drivers for onboard graphics chipset but some guy at Intel say they will run. How about virtualization as the 672 has it built in.
Any help would be appreciated, i been trying for half a year to get 9x out of vga mode w my 1920x1080 monitor. Intel does provide.inf but it is unpackable w winrar.9x (w98se) installs ok but no graphics support: is it possible to manually register the drivers?

Intel.inf util states support for 9x but always crahes.Best. From the film, 1984Characters:,Samantha: What are you waiting for?Hector: We're waiting for the light to change.Regina: We do NOT cross against the light!Samantha: Are you nuts, auntie Regina?Regina: You may as well face the facts Samantha. The whole burden of civilization has fallen upon us.Samantha: What's that supposed to mean?Regina: It means we do NOT cross against the light!Samantha: That's totally stupid, there's nobody here!
See, we're talking ghost town!Just then, a convertible comes speeding around the corner, Samantha jumps out of the way to avoid getting hit. The convertible turns around and comes to a stop by Samantha.Danny Mason Keener aka DMK: Gawd, I'm sorry but you shouldn't cross against the light like that.Samantha: Nice car.DMK: Thanks, I have 23 of them. You want to go for a ride?Samantha: More than you know.Hector: We don't know anything about this guy. Where's he from? What's his name?Samantha: What's your name?DMK: Danny Mason Keener.Samantha: Danny Mason Keener, okay?Regina: Yeah, all right.Regina: Well, just be back by midnight, okay?DMK: Midnight?Samantha: The burden of civilization is on us, okay?DMK: Oh, yeah. Bitchen, isn't it?
Thanks skip, already tried that: the GRV is OEM board not supported by Intel but GAG board is the same thing. Trouble is that Intel not provide drivers for 915 for w9x yet if i could unpack the.inf (which does support 9x) I might be able to make it direct me where to put the drivers manually by registering them.I am a newbe on such thing and don'r really understand how to construt a proper.inf even if i can figure out how to unpack the damn thing. Intel make it so it unpackable with rar or zip.Best. Sorry, maybe this will help explain: Intel D915GAG under OS support there is only one entry and it is for an,inf for ALL OS:I know that is kind of messy but you can dl it by D915GAG then dial into win9x support, there is only one file at this point and it is packed in an unknown format,Maybe I should explain further: I have run the exe but it still will not unpack on win98 or any os. Also note that this file has NO drivers,BestI am sorry, my old addled brain is faiking: when i do unpack it it says for 2K/XP only so I try an older MB.inf like 845 that does support 9x but that one will not unpack to give me a guideline for constructing a proper.inf for 9x so i get stuck every time trying to figure out how to buld an.inf for w9x on 915. Reminder: I never built a primary driver for win9x before, it's new territory for me.

The.exe file that DAVEINCAPS is referring to is what is called a self-extracting archive. You double click it and it unpacks itself usually into a new folder in the same directory where the executable was double clicked, and inside there might be a win98 folder and this would be the target you point the installer to where the.inf file to install with is to be found. It's best to do this in the Windows/TEMP folder as inf files need DOS mode support when it comes to finding files to install hardware with, in other words an installation can fail because the path is too complex for the 16 bit processes used to follow the path to the files gets lost.
Double clicking the self-extracting archive that you placed into the Windows/TEMP folder solves this problem nicely. It's the spaces in particular of a folders name that foul things up but long names alone can also derail the train. Eight characters or less in each name with no spaces and you are good to go.Normally one does not change anything in inf files to make them 'work', at this level it's far too complex a task for a noob to even think of doing.Lee. DAVEINCAPS'That.inf refuses to run except for XP, I have tried it in 2k and 9x and it refuses to run.I am study mdgx.inf format but i can't even open the Intel inf to see how it is formatted.I seem to be battling against some corp decision to not support old OS by the chipmakers. Maybe I should give up.Problem being that old CNC machine and some of my old software require 9x to talk: NT fails to communicate. (abstraction layer). That's why I ask about virtualization, can virtualization elenenate the need for hardware drivers?
Using an add-in card is always a possibility in the event you can't get the onboard graphics working. I forgot to specify that Intel separates their chipset and graphics drivers into different packages, or they did in the 9x days at least. As you have found, no 9x graphics driver is listed for your board or chipset. So, the only advice I can give is to try these three packages. Note that two of the downloads are named 'win9x.exe' but have different content. There is a decent chance that that motherboard was originally supported with 9x drivers, because the 875 boards still worked under 9x. If the links I provided don't work, your best chance of finding a 9x graphics driver would be to try and find an original drivers CD that came with that particular board.Who would have thought all those drivers CD's that came with older hardware would be so valuable now. To us 9x'ers at least.
